Marriage Building Programs for Parishes
Pope Francis told couples: “The Church herself is fully involved in the story of every Christian marriage: she is built on their successes and she suffers in their failures.” (May 2015)
The Pope is telling us that when marriages are strong, the Church is strong. Two programs parishes can use to help couples strengthen their marriages are: SIX DATES for Catholic Couples, and The Beatitudes, a Couple’s Path to Greater Joy.
These programs offer what husbands and wives are hungry for today: the opportunity to make time for each other and to go on a date. The programs invite couples to go on six private dates, each based on a different theme. Participants bring their children to the parish, watch a short video and then depart for their date guided in their private conversations with simple questions found on a handout.
SIX DATES for Catholic Couple is available with Spanish subtitles and handouts in Spanish: https://youtu.be_B6iGg7XN9o

Four requirements for Couples that wish to be married in the Catholic Church:
1) The process starts when you meet with your parish priest. Contact your parish as soon as possible.
2) Take the FOCCUS pre-marriage questionnaire at your parish.
FOCCUS is an excellent tool to help with the process of discernment and dialogue as you prepare for the sacrament of marriage. If you have not made arrangements to complete the FOCCUS, a pre-marriage questionnaire, please contact your pastor.
3) Complete a class on Natural Family Planning (NFP).
You can visit the Family Life page of the diocesan website (www.dioscg.org) to see the different classes we recommend, from personal one-on-one classes to Online classes to group classes. You are responsible for registering and paying for the class of your choice. Register early: When the class is completed, please give a copy of your certificate of completion to your pastor.
4) Attend a Marriage Preparation program.
The standard program our diocese offers consists of five, two-hour sessions held once a week for five consecutive weeks. The sessions are held in the home of a volunteer lead couple. Each session must be attended in order to receive a Certificate of Completion. Upon completion, this certificate will be mailed to your pastor. Sessions are scheduled in your area by our office. And while we try to accommodate your schedule, limited lead couple availability requires flexibility. Look forward to a fun and engaging time while making new friends!
Natural Family Planning
Modern Natural Family Planning is 100% natural and up to 99% effective as a family planning method. Learn how NFP benefits a couple’s relationship -including the nearly non-existent divorce rate among NFP-practicing couples.
Natural Family Planning Classes
The Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau requires a Natural Family Planning classes as part of the comprehensive Marriage Preparation process to be married at any of the Catholic parishes in our diocese. This is in addition to our 5-week Marriage Preparation classes. Research has shown that couples who practice Natural Family Planning have a much higher satisfaction in their married life and the divorce rate for those couples is much lower.
