Seminarians David Baunach, Charles Dunn, and Francisco Gordillo were ordained as transitional deacons by Bp. James V. Johnston in St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Cape Girardeau, on June 5, 2015. Concelebrating the Mass were Bp.-Emeritus John J. Leibrecht and many area priests.
The trio of deacons will be assigned to work in parishes in the diocese for the summer months following their ordination, and then return to school to complete studies and formation prior to their anticipated priestly ordination.
Fr. J. Friedel, Director of Vocations/Seminarians for the diocese, commented that he is excited to see the deacons begin their ministry.
“Three very distinct and unique men,” Fr. Friedel said of Baunach, Dunn, and Gordillo, “they will now join the bishop, priests, and deacons of the diocese in works of charity, the very special ministry of serving at the altar, and in the ministry of preaching. This is, for them, a very important step in their journey to priesthood.”
For the deacons, their ‘journeys’ began at different points in their lives, each hearing their respective call to priesthood at particular, unique moments, and their discernment taking each of them to different seminaries for formation and studies.
