History

Bishop Edwin O’Hara of Kansas City decided there should be a Catholic Church in every western county of what is now the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau. A grant from the Catholic Extension Society provided the money to buy two lots in El Dorado Springs, the location for the first Catholic church in Cedar County. St. Elizabeth Church was dedicated in 1946.

At first Eucharist was celebrated every other week by the pastor of

St. Mary in Nevada, MO. The first Sacrament of Confirmation was held in 1950. The first resident pastor, Fr. John J. White, boarded briefly in a house at 306 South Main before renting at 710 South Main.

The Catholic faith is a continuing presence in the area, thanks to the lived faith of those who have gone before and the continued growth of life in fellowship with God among the parishioners. The parish owes generous thanks to the early families and to Bishop O’Hara of Kansas City. Gratitude also belongs to Mark Smith, who, into his senior years, cared for the buildings and grounds and, most especially, to God for gifts beyond measure.

May the parishioners of St. Elizabeth ever more willing share their love of God with one another and their neighbors in the El Dorado Springs area and throughout the world.
